Women Empowering Journalism

We provide opportunities for young women interested in journalism

The purpose of WEJ is inspiring women to partake in journalism, as well as giving existing female journalists more opportunities in the field. By interviewing experts in the field, providing resources, and offering mentoring services for new members, WEJ will ensure that women are not underrepresented in media production.

Our Mission:

“It’s absolutely essential that media starts to reflect the reality of women’s lives or we’re not going to change the reality of women’s lives”

— Pat Mitchell, Media Executive, Producer, Curator of TEDWomen

What we hope to achieve:

  • Help uplift female voices

  • Inspire young women to pursue careers in journalism

  • Achieve a society where women can easily speak up on issues affecting them

What we offer:

  • Words of advice from accomplished female journalists

  • Provide resources for journalists looking to get started

We are a non-profit journalism project to support female journalists. Women are crucial to the journalism industry for several reasons.

First, to protect the safety of women. Every day, there are crimes committed against women that fly under the radar as a result of powerful cultural and professional stigmas that prevent women from speaking up. Having more women in journalism will ensure that more women get the platform they deserve.

Second, to report the success of other women. In a world where most professional careers are dominated by men, including journalism, there is an innate bias that contributes to the content that journalists produce. Women are still underrepresented in many unprofessional fields, not because they are unqualified but because there are not enough women to report their success. Having more women in journalism will even the playing field.

Finally, having more women in journalism will make journalism a topic that is widely available to more people. Usually, men are interested in topics men write about. By having more women in journalism, the field can present itself to more women, creating a bigger audience for journalism overall.
